ICTY prosecutor’s assessment is important factor, says Verhagen

The positive assessment given by the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is an important factor for the Netherlands in considering further steps towards Serbia’s integration with the European Union,

Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen has said. Mr Verhagen was responding to the presentation to the UN Security Council in New York of the prosecutor’s report on cooperation with the ICTY by Serbia and other countries.

In his report, chief prosecutor Serge Brammertz said that he was satisfied with Serbia’s cooperation with the ICTY. In his remarks before the Security Council, Mr Brammertz confirmed that there is a positive trend.

‘The report from Brammertz is positive,’ said Mr Verhagen. ‘Next week I will be discussing with my European colleagues the implications for decisions concerning Serbia’s integration process.’ At the request of the Netherlands and others, Mr Brammertz will be talking about his report next week at the Council meeting of EU foreign ministers and answering their questions.

The Netherlands wants the EU to support the work of the prosecutor as much as possible and to encourage Serbia to continue to cooperate with the ICTY. ‘We have to keep up the pressure, to make sure the last two fugitives, including Mladic, are apprehended and transferred to the Tribunal,’ stressed Mr Verhagen.
