New project on tolerance and human rights in schools in Serbia.
Newsflash |
23 March 2010
Human rights, tolerance, and the meaning of diversity were the themes of a discussion taking place at the Peta Beogradska Gimnazija on Friday 19 March. State Secretary for Human and Minority Rights Marko Karadzic and Netherlands Ambassador to Serbia Ron van Dartel spoke with pupils of the school in the framework of their participation in a new project titled "Peer Education Training for Promotion of Tolerance and Cooperation".
Ambassador Van Dartel underlined that human rights are
discribed in a large number of international treaties, but that it
is the responsibility of governments, civil society and individuals
to bridge the gap from paper to practice. The ensuing open debate
focused on a wide range of issues, including dealing with the
heritage of the past in the Balkans, freedom of speech,
LGBT-rights, tolerance on the personal level, and the expectations
the pupils have about their own future.
The project is implemented by the ngo "Obrazovanje Plus",
with support from the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights and
the Embassy of the Kingdom of The Netherlands, and will be
implemented in six schools in Belgrade, Pozarevac, Novi Sad,
Cajetina, Uzice and Lazarevac.
